Neuroscience, also known as neural science, is the study of the nervous system, its structure, and how it functions. The nervous system includes the brain, the spinal cord, and the sensory and motor nerve cells throughout the body. These three components work together to create and regulate emotion, thought, and behavior.
The field of neuroscience helps us understand what takes place inside the body on a physiological level during moments of joy as well as moments of suffering. Different areas of the brain become active when we are emotionally aroused. For example, the emotional center of the brain responds during fearful experiences, and positive experiences can even support the growth and strengthening of brain cells.
When we consider this in the context of faith, neuroscience offers a language for understanding the physical aspects of the body that our Heavenly Father has designed. It allows us to appreciate the remarkable ways the brain functions and the wisdom behind how God created us to respond, process, and adapt to the world around us.
